About
Siam Computing is a leading technology services provider based in Chennai, India. It’s mission is to simplify the problem-to-product journey for founders who aim to change the world.
Siam partnered with Being at Full Potential, a human and culture development firm, to align their 8 core values with the Inner Development Goals (IDG) framework. This collaboration aims to ensure that these values are consistently reflected in daily operations. It also helps measure how effectively they are expressed in the todays context.
Objectives of the case study
The objective of this case study is to explore how Siam Computing’s core values were mapped to the IDG framework and how the new IDG measurement tool was used to assess their impact on employee engagement, company culture, and contribution toward the SDGs.
Initial findings show that while some skills such as mobilization and perseverance are well-developed, others like empathy, compassion and co-creation skills need further focus.
The project positions Siam Computing as a pioneer in using the IDG framework & measurement tool, with plans to market this IDG-centered culture development approach to other organizations committed to SDG alignment and employee well-being.
Mapping siam values to idg skills
To align the organization’s core values with actionable development goals, the HR team at Siam Computing, along with key stakeholders, collaborated with Being at Full Potential to map their eight company values to the 23 skills identified in the IDG framework. The process required an in-depth understanding of both the intentions behind the company’s values and the alignment with the IDG skill set.
the mapping process involved:
1. Value Intention Mapping
Each of Siam Computing’s eight values was carefully analyzed to determine the inner skills required to fully embody them. The IDG framework was used to identify where the company’s values aligned with the specific skills within the IDG structure.
2. Cross Functional Collaboration
The HR team, key leaders within the organization, and Being at Full Potential worked collaboratively to sense into the intention of each value and map it to corresponding IDG skills.
By connecting the values to inner skills, the company is better equipped to make these values actionable across different teams and roles. Employees can now work towards more concrete developmental paths that align their personal growth with the company’s mission.
8 Siam Computing Values mapped to IDG Skills
outcome: measurement & analysis
To measure how effectively Siam Computing’s values and corresponding IDG skills were being expressed, the newly developed IDG measurement tool by Being at Full Potential was employed. This tool provides a quantitative assessment of how well these inner development goals, which serve as proxies for the company’s values, are being lived out in day-to-day operations.
All employees across different departments and levels of seniority participated in the survey. The data was then segmented by various criteria (e.g., departments, gender) to provide detailed insights into organizational strengths and areas for improvement.
key findings:
1. Most expressed IDG skills
Mobilization, perspective skills, and perseverance were the most prevalent, indicating a strong ability to stay focused and committed to the company’s mission.
2. Least expressed IDG skills
Presence, empathy, compassion, and co-creative skills were identified as the least expressed skills, suggesting room for improvement in how employees connect with one another and work collaboratively.
analytics from the idg assessment
Siam Computing excels on SDG 5: Gender Equality
- A significant and positive finding was the near-equal expression of these skills between men and women.
- This parity aligns with the company’s efforts to create an inclusive and equitable workplace.
qualitative insights from user interviews
As a part of the comprehensive assessment process, key user interviews were conducted in parallel with the IDG measurement tool. This dual approach offered a rich blend of qualitative and quantitative insights. Interestingly, the qualitative findings from the user interviews closely aligned with the key results obtained through the IDG tool. Some of the key user insights are:
1. Complexity Awareness
“There’s a need for more open communication and transparency between employees and management, as teams often miss out on updates and personal interactions, leading to a disconnect.”
2. Empathy & Compassion
“Empathy, approachability, and respect for time were identified as crucial elements of a positive work culture.”
3. Sense Making
“Formal process for new employee engagement is followed, but personal and engagement follow ups are lacking.”
strategies for culture development
The team identified IDG Skills that are already well expressed and can be further built on:
- Mobilization skills
- Perspective skills
- Perseverance skills
The team identified IDG Skills that are currently under expressed and can be further developed:
- Presence skills
- Empathy skills
- Co-creation skills
strengths to build on
Mobilization skills
Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): Support the formation of ERGs around shared passions (e.g., sustainability, women in tech, or diversity and inclusion). ERG leaders can practice mobilizing others around causes that align with the company’s mission, further embedding the skill within the culture.
Perspective skills
Cross-departmental rotations: Implement cross-departmental rotations or job-shadowing opportunities. This will allow employees to gain a better understanding of other departments’ challenges, responsibilities, and ways of thinking, thus broadening their perspectives.
Perseverance skills
Celebrating milestones & long-term success: Regularly celebrate both small wins and major milestones as part of a broader culture of recognition. This reinforces perseverance by helping employees feel valued for their efforts and see how their long-term persistence contributes to the company’s overall success.
opportunities to further develop
Presence skills
Mindful Mondays: Introduce a weekly practice where teams begin meetings with a few moments of mindfulness to center everyone and enhance focus during discussions.
Empathy skills
Story-telling sessions: Encourage employees to share personal stories during team building events. Storytelling helps humanize the workforce and build deeper empathy across the organization.
Co-creation skills
Hackathon: Employees come together to develop creative solutions to company challenges. These events encourage diverse teams to work together under pressure, fostering co-creative skill development.
introducing: new culture activation tool
An innovative tool is being developed by Siam Computing to implement the above strategies into the daily processes and activities making it easier to track the progress and measure impact of culture development. Once implemented and tangible results have been delivered we plan to re-run the IDG measurement tool across the entire organization and issue part 2 of this case study.
